2.0D Ingenium Timing Chain Replacement
This is a common fault, but a complex and expensive repair.
2.0 Ingenium Diesel Timing Chain
The 2.0 Ingenium diesel engine, featured in Jaguar, Land Rover, and Range Rover models, uses a pair of timing chains instead of a belt—a common trait in many modern engines. This design offers a significant advantage: timing chains are engineered to last the vehicle's lifetime, unlike timing belts that require periodic replacement. Given the timing system's crucial role, this design eliminates the need for conventional timing belt replacement—an essential yet often complex maintenance task—in these engines.
What is the issue with the 2.0 Ingenium Diesel Timing Chain Setup?
The issues found in Ingenium engines primarily stem from the materials used. The chains themselves are known to stretch, initially causing a rattling noise, and can even snap. A completely failed timing chain (one that no longer keeps the pistons and valves in sync) can cause the pistons to hit the valves, bending or breaking them and sometimes punching holes in the pistons. This catastrophic engine damage often necessitates sourcing a new engine from JLR to get the vehicle running again, as repair is simply not economically viable.
This isn't the only failure mode of the Ingenium diesel. The plastic guides that the chains run along can also cause problems. As they wear over time, plastic particles from the guides can enter the engine oil pickup system, gradually blocking it. This can lead to spun crankshaft bearings, causing bottom end failure, as well as turbocharger failures due to insufficient lubrication. In some cases, large pieces of the guides can break off, causing additional engine failures.
What Is The Solution To The Fundamental Design Flaws Of Ingenium Diesel Timing Chains?
In 2019, Jaguar Land Rover revised the parts used in the timing system, including the introduction of an upgraded set of thicker timing chains, greatly increasing the system's durability. This new kit is now recommended for replacement in all vehicles and is the one used in this Range Rover Evoque.
Unfortunately, timing chain replacement is a complex procedure requiring significant parts and labor. However, failing to replace it when necessary can lead to catastrophic damage, as mentioned earlier. We can inspect your timing chain to determine if it's stretched or in need of replacement.
